Our First Dog-Hazey

Updated: May 3, 2019

We owned a beautiful red brindle greyhound who, like all greyhounds, slept all day. The name she came with is Hazey though we often called her Hazel or Hazel Ann. Her racing name was Hazeynlazy, though she didn't qualify to race. She was born November 30, 2013. She lived 5 years-the lifespan for greyhounds is around 13 years.

My husband, Douglas, and I adopted her from GPAIndy (GPA=Greyhound Pets of America) three years ago. GPAIndy is a greyhound adoption agency that fosters these dogs after the race tracks are done with them. They clean them up, give them vet checks and shots, have them fixed (so people adopt the greyhounds in need instead of breeding), house and crate train them, and so much more.

She was extremely timid when we first adopted her and did not like men. She was scared of everything. She had/has some scattered scars and ribs that were obviously broken previously and healed weird. It took a few weeks for her to trust me and a few months for her to trust Douglas. But once she trusted us she was the happiest dog on Earth. She loved walks, car rides, and treats. She knew these words so unless we want to take her on a car ride or a walk we have to use other terms so she didn't get excited.

Happy Gotcha Day!

Hazey has her own Instagram account: @the.greyt.hounds. If you would like updates about her and you're on Instagram, give her a follow. You won't regret it!

Interested in Greyhounds?

Since Florida recently banned greyhound racing there will be plenty of greyhounds in need of a good home. If you're interested in adopting a greyhound, visit http://www.greyhoundpets.org/ to find a chapter near you. I also recommend reading the books Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia A. Branigan and Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies. You can find both of the books on Amazon.
